MS-08: Science, Weather & Maps -------------- 0667 Astronomy Small Programs Disk -------------- AstroCalc I 1.0 (ASTROCI) Hesperus & Co. $20 calculates astronomical data for the sun, moon, and planets. You enter the date, time, geographical location and get back sky positions. Sky positions include right ascension and declination, local altitude and azimuth, celestial latitudes and longitudes, distances from the sun and earth, angular size, brightness, and rise and set times. It also supplies sidereal time, twilight times, Julian day numbers, equation of time values, phase of the moon and planets, elongations from the sun and orbital elements. All the basic astronomical information, including heliocentric and geocentric, is provided in a well organized format. AstroView (A-VIEW) Collins, Bill $0 is the best public domain astronomy program we've seen. It lets you select a longitude and latitude from a map of the world and then view the planets and stars on each horizon or overhead. Unlike similar programs, this one is fast. Cluster White, David E. $10 simulates stellar mechanics, i.e. the effect of gravity on the motion of objects in space. It can be used to model the motion of stars in a cluster, or of planets around a sun. Several sample data files are supplied. CGA, EGA, VGA, and Herc are supported. Mars-EGA Nohr, Paul and Rowe, Basil H. $10 will give a simulated view of mars and the moon. You can change the time and date of the simulation, change the eyepiece or animate the view. Optics Westwater, Bob $? computes various parameters of a reflecting telescope. Planets Puhl, Larry $? computes information relating to the position, distance, magnitude, orbit view, skyview, etc for the major planets, four minor planets or halley's comet on a specified date and time. Also, orbital data for any desired planet or comet can be entered and saved in a disk file. Skyview and orbital views can show forward or backward motion. The moons for each planet can be displayed. Sunrise calculates the time of sunrise and sunset. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #0667 -------------------------------- ACE (AstroSoft Computerized Ephemeris) Gardner, Jerry and Morrison, Martin $? #27047/798 [2 disks] is a general-purpose astronomy software package consisting of three separate parts: Part I of ACE performs the most needed astronomical calculations, involving the sun, the moon, the planets, eclipses, astrophotography exposures, mean sidereal time and Julian Day, precession of coordinates, phases of the moon, equinoxes and solstices, Galilean satellites of Jupiter, perpetual calendar, and Polaris. It achieves an accuracy in calculations that is comparable to those contained in the ASTRONOMICAL ALMANAC and is more comprehensive and convenient, for astronomical observing purposes, than the FLOPPY ALMANAC. Part II of ACE provides orbital and physical data, as well as descriptive and observational data, for all the planets and satellites of the solar system, Part III of ACE provides data on over 2000 deep-sky objects, the entire Messier Catalog, 100 named objects, all bright stars to magnitude 2.00, and 100 prominent double stars, with detailed commentary on nearly 400 of these objects. Deep Space 3-D David Chandler Co. $79 #27047/1718 [2 disks] is a full featured tool for producing professional quality star charts in a wide range of formats. It allows you to plot star maps (flat or in 3-D) for any part of the sky, to scale, for any given day, time and latitude, with or without constellation lines, with or without labels, to any brightness cutoff down to magnitude 7.2, and much more. It will also compute an observing for any known comet. Included is an NGC catalog of galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. An observer's log is also included. Requires 512K and a hard drive. Anytime/Suntime 1.2 [ANYTIME] 09-93 CD RejTech $5-$7 #12441 Anytime shows the current time for up to 11 cities world-wide. Suntime shows sunrise/sunset times, as well as other information, for a city selected from a database of over 1300 cities. CircumSpace 1.0 [CIRCUM10] 08-93 CD Haney, Mark A. ASP $15 #12360 is a space travel simulator. It displays the sky as seen from anywhere within several hundred light years of Earth. You can click to travel instantly to any of 7780 stars, or choose the warp mode to animate the journey quickly and smoothly. It teaches you which stars are neighbors and which are distant. Requires 512K and EGA/VGA. Gravity Safarik, Steve $15-$40 #27227/2490 will let a person experiment with the orbits of planets as they may occur in the universe. The motions of planets can be very interesting to watch as each planet affects other planets via its gravitational force. You can enter actual systems and watch them execute. A Zoom feature allows entering small or large systems. The maximum number of planets was doubled to 16. Viewing perspectives now includes from any of the planets. Moonbeam #27227/635 determines the phase, position, and illumination of the moon. To plot the star data, graphics is required. SeeStars Tavolga, Bill $15 #27227/2288 will provide a facsimile view of the sky as seen from a selected place and time. Planets and moon phases are included. Requires EGA/VGA and mouse. SkyGlobe 3.52 Haney, Mark A. ASP $20 #27227/2551 lets you see on the screen what the sky would look like at night. SkyGlobe contains coordinates for 3250 stars. You can specify the time, date, direction and location of the view. You can change the number of stars; adjust the magnification of your sky view; and brighten the stars. The program can display Latitude, Longitude and Ecliptic lines to help you orient yourself on the celestial sphere. Our Cosmohood Bondono, Jeff $25 #27731/4189 is a 3-D view of 2,368 galaxies closest to the Earth. The program is based on data from Brent Tully's catalog, Nearby Galaxies. You can specify your viewing position, where to view, and how wide the field of view should be. A demo mode takes you on a trip through the cosmos. Requires 500K memory and a hard disk. Starside Virtual Srket Technology $20 #27731/3247 is designed to generate star maps from any place in the world, for any given time. Positions of the Sun, Moon and planets may be included on any map. Objects can be easily located with search and zoom. You can generate Starmaps or print coordinates. A realtime update can track celestial objects throughout the night. A database of common objects is included to get you started. Options are included to merge, change, add, search and create a customized database of celestial coordinates. EGA and 512K are required. Starware 3.2 Prag, Arthur B. $32 #27731/3458 displays the sky at any time and place, including a million years into the future or past. It uses FK5 star locations and proper motions. It shows all the planets and all 88 constellations. You can use a mouse or the keyboard to select a particular object for identification, or to change the azimuth or elevation angle of the observer. You can also change the time of day in plus or minus hour increments and the date a day, a year, 100 years, and 1000 years at a time. It will optionally put boxes around visible planets and draw lines for the constellations. It will find and move to the center of the display a specified star, constellation, planet, sun or moon. Starware will also capture a screen to a printable file. This is an outstanding program for anyone interested in astronomy. Requires EGA/VGA. [Note: When entering the time, you must adjust your local time back to Greenwich time ("Universal Time").] PC-Track Johnson, Thomas C. ASP $25 #27639/4022 can track up to eight satellites in real time with 3D graphics and flat map displays. It provides the antenna pointing data necessary to transmit signals to or receive signals from satellites. It features informative printouts; downlink frequency display, showing doppler shift; multiple maps available of world and continents; support for UTC time or LOCAL time; support for the metric or English system; an Azimuth Elevation chart which displays relationship of object to observer; a utility that will scan for next available orbits; a conversion utility for converting NORAD/NASA two line orbital elements to PC-Track format and much more. Requires 2.5meg of disk space, 640K, and EGA/VGA. STSOrbit 9114 Ransom, David H. Jr. $? #27639/3750 is an orbital tracking and display program for use during Space Shuttle missions, for simulating a Space Shuttle mission, or for general satellite tracking. It displays the approximate orbital position and ground track of the Space Shuttle on a global map during a typical NASA mission. When used with NASA/NORAD 2-Line Elements, other satellite ground tracks may also be displayed. Trajectory Maker Reynolds, Herb $60 #27639/4023 [2 disks] predicts trajectories for satellites, escape probes, and ballistic missiles orbiting the earth. It displays trajectory ground traces as they are generated, three map projections, altitude history trend and time and altitude numerical data. This is a sophisticated program suitable for professional use. It offers four acceleration models and numerous output formats. Trajectory Scape ($40), the companion to Trajectory Maker, is a multiple trajectory viewing tool. It displays trajectories on several optional map projections including Mercator, stereographic, Hammer-Aitoff equal area, and Mollweide equal area. It lets you choose from three central viewing regions including Greenwich meridian, the Americas, and Russia. Requires a hard drive and EGA/VGA. Messier Observer's Guide 1.0 Kalinowski, Larry F. $40 #12076 shows you where to find some of the most famous telescopic objects in the universe. Twenty-five Messier objects are shown in graphical form with the constellation each appears in, as it would be seen by the naked eye, along with an arrow that shows the Messier object's approximate position among the stars. Coordinates, description, type of object, constellation, catalog number and brightness are shown. A special inset in each display shows the object as it would appear in a telescope or binoculars, along with a recommended magnification for observing. VGA is required. NGP Williams, G. Dean $0 #27225/2060 [3 disks] is a database management facility built upon The Revised New General Catalogue Of Nonstellar Astronomical Objects (RNGC) (Sulnetic and Tift 1973). The program's purpose is to make it easy to extract desired sets of objects based upon variable selection criteria, rapidly sort selected data upon various fields, view, or print lists of selected objects, also enter, view, and edit personal notes for any object. Requires 512k and 2 meg of hard disk space, plus a color monitor. Solar Eclipse Merrill, Matthew M. $0 #3115 predicts and plots solar eclipses for 180 eclipses from 1951 thorough 2032. It provides tabular output for central line, partial phase limits, and graphic output of limit lines on a world map. Stellar Evolution 2.0 Greaney, Edward $20 #20148 is an interactive tutorial on stellar evolution. It was designed for high school level astronomy. Each stage of a star's life is discussed with both graphical and pictorial illustrations. The program has a few bugs in it, but is still a worthwhile presentation. Requires VGA, a mouse and 2.5 MB of hard disk space. Universe Analyzer Mahin, Mark $15-$35 #1924 purports to show scientifically that the universe must have been created rather than having been formed by random happenings. The basis for this conclusion is a calculation showing that the odds of all circumstances being just right so that the universe could form are extremely small. This whole exercise seems to swing on the "obvious fact" that if the odds of something happening are 1 in a googolplex, then it can be dismissed. However, while that may be a fair assumption in everyday life, in the context of infinite time in which the universe could well exist, every possible circumstance, no matter how remote, would eventually occur. In other words, who's to say that a googolplex of failed universes did not occur prior to the development of this one? Nevertheless, if you have not been exposed to the scientific theories underlying the calculations in this program, you may find reading about them in the program to be interesting. ----------------- 1331 Maps, Travel Small Programs Disk ----------------- DXCC displays the longitude and latitude of specified cities, states or countries. Designed primarily for ham radio operators, others may find it useful too. Gulf29 $0 are Mideast map files to be used with WORLD29, the popular computer-globe program that lets you zoom in on any area of the world you wish. These files add locations of over 150 cities in the Mideast, including Kuwait, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. If you don't already have World29, order disk #142. Locator 2.0 Drago, Charles $15 is a map coordinate locator that will give the accurate longitude and latitude coordinates for any location on a map using just a ruler. Mapper draws maps of the world from different user-specified perspectives. Soma29 Lloyd, Robert L. ASP $10-$15 provides users of WORLD29 (the globe program on disk #0142) with a more detailed map of the country of Somalia. It lists the names of towns and villages within the country for those interested in keeping track of the current U.N. relief project. Trip Cooper, Irvin J. $5 allows you to pick from 25 states to travel to and from, selecting towns along the way through which you wish to travel from a map on the screen. When done, you can print an itinerary showing your departure time, miles between and estimated time of arrival at each town on the list. USAMap (MAP-DH) Harms, Donald $? prompts you for cities you will be traveling through on your trip, draws a map of the U.S. and plots your route, displaying the total distance you will be traveling. Donald doesn't say how many cities and towns are in the databank, but there are a LOT. He says it took six months to type all the data in. The plus and minus keys supposedly let you zoom in and out and the cursor keys move you around, but we were not able to get that feature to work. Graphics required. USSR29 Lloyd, Robert L. $0 is a set of supplemental files for the program WORLD29 (#7226/142). The file consists of the boundaries, names of the republics, capital and large cities of all 15 of the Soviet Republics which existed in August 1991. The map shows the Baltic Republics separate from the USSR. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1331 -------------------------------- Atlas 2.12s Horizons Consulting $32 #4595 contains information about the geography, people, economy, government, communications, and defense of 23 countries: Afghanistan, Cuba, Panama, Antarctica, Falklands Islands, Philippines, Atlantic Ocean, Grenada, South Africa, Belgium, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Bolivia, Iran, U. S., Brazil, Japan, World, Canada, Libya, Yugoslavia, China, and Mexico. No maps are included, but a wealth of statistical information about each country is. Amateur Seismology Package 1.2 Robert K. Samuelson $0 #3311 allows you to study seismographic data and print seismograms, including data from recent earthquakes. EarthBASE Resource Management Simulations $199-$479 #27812/4564 is a mapping application which allows you to display, manipulate and analyze data geographically. You can read, write and create XBASE files and import/export delimited ASCII files. You can find locations on a world map using 5-digit zip codes or latitude/longitude data. You can print or export graphics displays in TIF format. Data analysis functions allow you to alphabetically sort any combination of fields and sort records by distance from a specific point. An animated tutorial is provided. EarthWatch 3.0 [EARTHWCH] (11-93 CD) Nagy, Lawrence A. Jr. $25 #27812/4565 is a real-time, graphic display of a mercator projection map of the world. Features include support for years 0-3000; a graphic presentation of daylight and night areas of the earth; sunrise and sunset times for a specified location and date; sunrise and sunset compared to the previous day; number of days until the start of the next season; percentage of daylight for the present date at a specific location; time of day in each of the world's time zones; date on either side of the international date line; present sunrise and sunset zones throughout the world; position, age, and phase of the moon; position of the sun along the analemma path throughout the year, and a solunar table for any month and year. EducAtlas 1993 Francois Jarraud $20 #20109/2585 [2 disks] is a statistical world atlas which allows you to draw statistical maps and print them. A wealth of statistical information is provided for about 160 countries, allowing you to cross-index information to study such subjects as infant mortality. FastMap Okita, Glen $0 #27779/4430 [3 disks] is a fun way to learn about world geography. It displays a world map drawn up with different colors to specify the different regions. The world map starts as a globe, but can be toggled to a flat map display. You can rotate the globe (or scroll around the flat map) in any direction with the cursor keys. You may, at any time, zoom in and out on any area and increase or decrease the level of detail for accuracy of borders and coast lines. Requires EGA/VGA. Finger Maps Poisson Technology $18 #2813 is an object-oriented drawing package supplemented with a comprehensive database of world geographical coordinates. It may be used as a stand-alone object drawing program, a world map maker or a PCX paint image file editor. The finished drawing can be saved and converted into a PCX bitmap or a proprietary object format. You can import other PCX files as background images and draw objects on top of them. The screen image can be printed to HP LaserJet compatible printers. The map database includes geographical coordinates of all country borders, U.S. state borders, major rivers and lakes, U.S. state capitals and other major U.S. cities and foreign capitals. Requires 384K. GeoClock 5.0 Ahlgren, Joseph R. $30 #1507 is a map of the earth which shows the sun's position day or night based on the actual time of day. The part of the Earth in sunlight is bright, and the rest is in darker shades. The position of the sun is also displayed. A variety of map backgrounds and other options are available, including polar projection maps. EGA, VGA, and SVGA display modes are supported, with the ability to control the color of the markers with the distance function. The display is updated from once per second to every 20 seconds, depending on the computer's CPU. City names, and local sunrise, sunset, the sun's azimuth and elevation may be displayed, and the time and rate of time may be changed. An extensive help system is also provided. Support is also provided for orthographic projection (which is a view from space). GeoNet Mapping System Rongey, Tony $85 #1781 provides the kind of support needed by individuals and small companies who work with random data to interpret three dimensional surfaces. Although developed with the petroleum industry in mind, it can be easily used to any set of X, Y, Z data provided that simple requirements are followed. The user interface was designed to provide most of the information needed for use, so the manual is brief. The program includes facilities for data entry/edit, raw data display, grid calculation (very fast), 2D and 3D maps, and printing of the 3D map. Requires EGA and 1 floppy. 640K and hard disk recommended. Mouse optional. GSDraw and GSMap #0582 are prototype programs to assist geologists and illustrators in compilation and publication drafting of geologic maps and diagrams. They represent an effort to do for geologic drafting what digital word processing has done to facilitate composition and publication of text. As a set of practical "graphics programs", they enable digital compilation of graphical elements, ease the process of modification in response to second thoughts, editorial comments and scale change, and lead from initial compilation to publication without redigitizing or redrafting. Requires GTCO Digi-Pad and HP-7550A plotter. Interstate Traveler 2.0 Jacobson, David E. ASP $29 #27793/3743 [2 disks] allows you to plan road trips on the Interstate Highway System and on roadways throughout the contiguous United States. You can add cities, towns, highways, and junctions to the screen maps and use them temporarily or as a permanent part of the data files. You can plan the trip on a full map of the U. S. or on a zoomed-in view of a specific area. You can schedule stops for food, gas, rest, visits, overnight stays and full day stay-overs. Results of each day's plan are printed in an itinerary along with an estimate of expenses. Screen maps include the locations of 39 national parks and monuments. It displays individual maps of 30 of the largest cities, showing major highways, lakes, rivers, and the locations of selected points of interest. Population and weather information is also provided. Requires 512K, EGA or VGA, and DOS 3.3+, and a 720k or better drive. Kansas Garrison, JC $25 #2237 provides detailed county maps for the state of Kansas, plus an overview map of the entire state. You can optionally display towns, major highways, roads, and townships. You can zoom in/out and print on an Epson or HPLJ printer. MapIt 1.2 Allison Software ASP $49 #20041/4707 [2 disks] is a world map program with interesting features. Like other globe programs, you can zoom in on parts of the world for more detail, such as state and country boundries and rivers. You can add lines and hypertext-type points to click on for a text box to pop up. Text can be scaled in size and displayed in any of seven type styles, including italic and Old English. Zooming in a particular area is very easy in Mapit because you can click and drag to mark the corners of the area you would like to display, rather than having to click in a level at a time, adjusting the centering as you go. Requires EGA/VGA, 512k RAM, 1MB disk space, mouse. ScreenMap GUIDE - Chicago ScreenMap Co. $0 #27760/4268 will quickly locate streets in downtown Chicago by address or name and display them on screen. Map data can be extracted into AutoCad's DXF format. You can also output street coordinates in longitude and latitude to a text file. Requires VGA. ScreenMap GUIDE - NY ScreenMap Co. $0 #27760/4341 will quickly locate streets in downtown New York by address or name and display them on screen. Map data can be extracted into AutoCad's DXF format. You can also output street coordinates in longitude and latitude to a text file. Requires VGA. ScreenMap GUIDE San Francisco 1.01 ScreenMap Co. $25 #27760 [2 disks] is a street map of San Francisco, CA county. It locates streets by name and address and displays them on screen. Map data can be extracted into AutoCad's DXF file. (640k, hard disk, VGA) TourMiles Heart of Gold Tour Management $98 #27794/4494 [3 disks] calculates mileage and travel time between various destinations. Up to 75 tour cities can be calculated at one time. U.S. and Canadian cities are included. Requires 512k RAM and 2MB of disk space. Travel Points Of Interest 2.0 [TPOI] (11-93 CD) Facts Online $25 #4342 is a database of geographical areas of interests in the U.S. The name, address, telephone number, days open and descriptions are listed for each place you select. About 1,000 places in the USA, from art to zoos, are included. This is just the thing for planning your summer vacation! Requires 2 meg of disk space and 500K memory. Versamap 1.3 Culberson, Charles ASP $15 #27048/3381 (10-93 CD) is a versatile mapping program which can transform spherical latitude and longitude values into planar X,Y map coordinates and plot them on a map projection of your choice. A digital map database such as The World Digitized (#7048, below) is required. Maps can be printed to screen, dot matrix or laser printers, to disk as a PCX graphic file, or as an ASCII text file for use in business and technical graphing programs. A digital map of the world is provided. Other features include support for monographics; the ability to export maps as PIC files for importing into WordPerfect, Freelance, etc.; the ability to plot data with different colors and symbol types; and the ability to view disk directories. Text can be added to maps, map designs can be saved, maps can be exported in CGM graphic format, and Geological Survey Digital Line Graph data can be plotted. Mouse support is included, and a hard disk is strongly recommended. DOS 3+ and 512K are required. The World Digitized #27048/1515 [3 disks] is a collection of more than 100,000 points of latitude and longitude. When connected together, these co-ordinates form outlines of the entire world's coastlands, islands, lakes, and national boundaries in surprising detail. The philosophy adopted in making The World Digitized available to the public is that the exercise of ones own creativity and imagination is much more interesting and profitable than the acquisition of a fixed program. The World Digitized is, therefore, simply a raw data base sprinkled with a few suggestions to be used as jumping off points in your personal quest to create significant and dazzling programs. Nautical O'Conor, Rory $20 #27224/2555 [3 disks] is an astronavigation program. It includes a built-in almanac for 1950 - 2050. There is automatic reduction of sights, graphical displays of the stars, and a world map. Other features include coastal and constellation outlines, planetary data, measurement unit conversions, time zone check, and an automated installation program. QuickMap SW CartoSoft Ltd. $25-$65 #2020 is a computerized atlas and a custom map-maker in one. You can find, plot and line-join latitude/longitude geographical locations. It also provides instant facts and information about the areas displayed. You can edit, save and retrieve both custom map screens and customized information records. Terra-Time GeoGraphics Software $20 #1121 displays a map of the world that shows local time all over the globe. It gives a true display of night/day line on earth's surface (sinewave), Universal Time Code selection, bearing calculation between cities along with great circle distance computation for HAM operators, variable timezones, alternative user data file input on command line, city code strips longer than three characters, user selection of sound features Also on the disk is the following: World City Distance Computer calculates the distance in miles, kilometers and average flight time between two user-specified major cities in the world. It has an aircraft selection feature, a separate datafile with all USA cities only and additional cities in the program and data file; installed enroute location feature which estimates aircraft position and nearby cities as a function of time since takeoff. A keyboard lock feature can be used to keep people off your computer while you are away. A currency feature does foreign currency translations. Storm 6.11 [STORM611] (11-93) Utopia Software ASP $25 #27226/1210 tracks hurricanes. It can track a storm stored on a disk files or a new storm. It allows you to enter data on a current storm as often as you wish and print out a list of the storm's location by date and time. In addition, the program will provide a warning if the storm is within l00 miles of the city selected as the TRACK-TO CITY, and display the selected storm super-imposed on a color map. It also has the ability to project the location of the storm 12 hours into the future based on current course and speed; the ability to enter and display central pressure data; storm intensity categories for printout; displays of the time zone selected, and units on wind speed and central pressure; the ability to differentiate storm tracks, show storm strength, and compare storms; and the ability to default map types. Storm caused the screen to go crazy on one of our test systems with a CGA, even though Storm was configured for CGA. It worked on an EGA and on another CGA system, however. The program has a 640x480x16 VGA Mode. You can generate plots on HP7475A, 7550A, HP ColorPro Plotters, and Epson and LaserJet printers. Tracker Froberg, Theodore P. $10 #27226/1848 [2 disks] is a tropical cyclone database and mapping system, complete with varying sounds and colors to indicate the varying strength of storms. You can single-step through the storm's path, or Tracker will animate it for you. Storm data can be entered via a spreadsheet format. Tracker comes with data for all the more than 300 tropical, subtropical and extratropical cyclones that have occurred in the Atlantic basin from 1950 through 1986, which is a total of over 10,000 storm positions. A special "Match" feature of Tracker allows you to compare the current storm with up to 20 of the most similar historic storms from the data base and overlay their tracks on the map. A hard disk and EGA compatible video are required. An 80x87 is helpful, but not required. World29 2.9g Lloyd, Robert L. ASP $10 #27226/142 is the ultimate "globe". The most fun part of World is pointing with the cursor keys and seeing increasingly detailed maps (down to about the size of a state). This is the screen you see at computer shows, but World has a lot more: flexible latitude and longitude entry, five level location display, a city finder, distance calculator, state and national capitals locator, hurricane tracking, unified Yemen and Germany maps, and more. The program supports EGA/VGA (otherwise CGA is required). Note that NumLock must be on and you must use the number pad to move the pointer, not the cursor keys. James J. Schmidt, Sunnyvale, CA: "The program hangs after drawing a map and aborts with an error message." PsL: After starting the program, it asks if you want to use an overlay file and shows "Y/N", when we entered "Y" we received the error message after the map was drawn.
